Insects Beautiful Insects!

Today was Insect day in class.  In the morning we had a practice on stage for our insect concert.  Then we painted our bug shirts and watched a Magic School Bus movie on butterflies and ants.  In the afternoon we went outside and observed insects and minibeasts in nature.  What a fun day working with insects and minibeasts!

Butterflies

For the past 16 days we have been watching the life cycle of a butterfly in the classroom.  It is a wonderful project and the students (and teachers) have learned so much!  We ordered the eggs from a company in London and when they arrived they were already caterpillars (larvae).  Then they grew bigger and bigger.  Then they formed a chrysalis (cocoon) and slept for about 9 days.  Starting on Thursday, the butterflies started to hatch from the chrysalis.  We were so excited!  When we arrived to school this morning all 5 butterflies where in the tent flying around.  This afternoon we had to let them fly away into nature.  We will miss them, but know that they are better off out in nature.

We love learning about insects and minibeasts!

Dr. Jane Goodall

Dr. Jane Goodall visited ASW last Monday.  It was a wonderful experience!  She is quite the woman!  What an inspiration.  She came to meet the Roots and Shoots club at the elementary school.  Mrs. Hammond and I teach the after school program, started by Jane Goodall, that works on enviornment, animal and community projects.  And we are the ONLY Roots and Shoots program in all of Poland.  So Dr. Jane Goodall just had to meet us.  A few students in 1J have been in Roots and Shoots and were asked to help greet Dr. Jane at the door.  It was a special moment indeed.

Dr. Jane Goodall spoke with the Middle and High School and again to the students in 1-5.  She spoke of her time in the African jungle studying chimpanzees and the importance of conservation now.  She is a wonderful example of how 1 life and truely make a difference.

(Can you find Johan, Nina and Nienke?)

I hope you look into joining Roots and Shoots next year!
