Peace Day

September 21st was International Peace Day. We've been talking about peace and what it means to us all week. Last week we made pinwheels for peace with our 3rd grade buddies. Then on Tuesday morning we met in the front of the school with the other first and third graders and planted our pinwheels into the ground. We hope you saw them throughout the week.

We are also working on our very own Peace Day book. We will publish it soon and take turns bringing it home in our 1J book bag.

We hope you are finding peace in your life.

3rd Grade Buddies

We meet our 3rd Grade buddies yesterday! We have partnered up with the students in 3H-Mrs. Horner's class. We will meet with them throughout the year and do a variety of projects. Yesterday we made Peace Day Pin Wheels with them. Tuesday, September 21st in International Peace Day. All of the 1st and 3rd graders are making pin wheels to put up around the school. We had a fun time together.

Here are some pictures of the buddies introducing themselves.

Johnson's Journal

Dear Parents,
We are moving right along in 1st grade. We all have settled into our routines and things are running smoothly now. Here are a few examples of what we have been up to:

Math-
We have continued to explore numbers. Each morning we count the days in school and update our calendar. We are learning about the tens and ones places (12th day of school is 1 ten, and 2 ones) and how to read a calendar. This week we practiced putting numbers in order and played games where we compare numbers.

Reading-
Reading groups have begun and during our reading block the students each meet in small groups to read with the teachers. During these small groups we discuss letter sounds, re-tell what the book was about, and practice comprehension skills. The students are doing a great job taking their books home each night and bringing them back in the morning.

Rewards- We have a variety of rewards set up in our classroom. We are working as a class to fill our marble jar, as well as our personal goal of receiving Star Student Tickets. We are focusing on the character trait Friendship right now, and when I catch the students being a good friend they get to add a sticker to our chart. We have a lot to work hard for!

The kids are learning to act as responsible 1st graders and I want to thank you for all your help and dedication.

Ms. Johnson
